Council agrees to support independent training for local Business Chambers and Associations to optimise grant and sponsorship opportunities

As part of my commitment to championing small business, last night my request that our local business chambers and associations receive independent assistance and additional training for grants and sponsorship submissions was unanimously supported by council.

My Notice of Motion asked for more support for business chambers and other business groups from the NSW Business Chamber and the Office of the Small Business Commissioner.  I requested that the City of Sydney assist in the tailored development of this support because I strongly believe that:

  • Our local chambers are vital for our small businesses, your hard work deserves more support and while funding is available from the City, the challenges you face relates to the inevitable red tape that comes with any funding process.
  • The NSW Business Chamber and the Office of the Small Business Commissioner have the resources and experience to help you maintain your independence and get better funding outcomes from your submissions.
  • Your executive members are busy trying to run their own businesses and they don’t necessarily specialise in grant submissions.  How many of us small business owners do?

I believe this will place your chambers and associations in a better position to take advantage of funding and sponsorship opportunities with strong submissions and impressive strategic plans that will result in long-term sustainability for your representative groups.

It was also agreed that the CEO will explore the use of training facilities located in the Local Government Area that may be used for independent tailored grant and sponsorship training.

I look forward to following the progress of this proposal and also continuing my work through my role as a Councillor and Deputy Chair of the City of Sydney’s Economic Development and Business Sub Committee in supporting business development.

Thank you for the work you do in supporting businesses in the local Government area and if you would like to discuss this further, please feel free to get in touch.

I believe that there are many great initiatives that could be supported by the City of Sydney into the future and I will continue to support small business in any way that I can.
