Australia’s population is ageing and this trend is reflected in demographic forecasts for the City of Sydney. By 2026, the local government area is forecast to see a 71.1 per cent increase in the population of retirement age residents. Effective planning is required to ensure that the City is best positioned to meet the needs of its future population profile by tailored support services to the needs of older people.
The city needs to build on the existing ten-year action plan for aged services and facilities with a focus on health, participation and security, transport, housing and community engagement. During the 2016 local election, Angela Vithoulkas and the Sydney Matters team put forward a seniors policy to do just that.
