After a period of more than a year, I am very pleased that an agreement has been reached between the City of Sydney and the NSW Government concerning the Wattle Street depot site in Ultimo.
The Ultimo Primary School has existed on its current site for 100 years and it desperately needs growing room if the future of quality public education in the area is to continue. After walking away from talks last month, I welcome the state government’s return to the negotiating table, now committing $74 million to the purchase of the Wattle Street site.
I am aware that prolonged negotiations about the matter have caused huge frustrations for residents. I am also pleased that both the City of Sydney and the NSW Government have taken the step to commit to the future development of public education in Sydney.
The new school, proposed to be made up of 40 classrooms, a school hall and library will accommodate around 1000 students and will help to ensure that quality public education remains strong in Sydney now and into the future.
