It is resolved that Council:

(A) note that:

(i) the extreme injurious health effects of the smoking of tobacco, both to the smoker and those around them;

(ii) the annual costs of smoking of tobacco to the Australian community is more than $31 billion, more than 15,000 deaths annually, more than $15 billion in workplace costs, $750,000 in hospital bed days, $600 million in hospital costs (Source ASH Australia); and

(iii) Council provides an area for smokers on the Marconi Terrace, Town Hall; and

(B) request that the Chief Executive Officer:

(i) declare that Sydney Town Hall is a smoke free environment;

(ii) advise that all private event organisers who book for functions within the Town Hall from 1 January 2014 that the Town Hall is a smoke-free environment and event guests must respect the smoke-free environment in the Town Hall, including the Marconi Terrace; and

(iii) report back to Council what measures have been undertaken to ensure that organisers are properly informed of the non-smoking policy.
