This is one of the proudest cultural moments that the Greek community of Sydney, and indeed Australia has had. The Greek Presidential Guard (EVZONES) marching down the middle of George St.
I am very proud that I was able to facilitate a magnificent collaborative effort to provide a police escort for the Presidential Guard to march down George St on their way to standing guard at the Cenotaph to honour our fallen Australian soldiers. TfNSW, the NSW Police and many others came together to make this happen. A sign of respect and honour amongst all.
There was a silence on George St as the sound of their strong perfectly synchronised clogs – part of their ceremonial uniform resounded with each step along George St. The Presidential Guard has been brought to Sydney to assist in the official commemorative ceremonies of the 75th Battle of Crete and what’s known as the second ANZAC campaign. Greece & the people of Crete played a significant role in the war efforts.
Culturally significant moments like this bring people together and keeps history alive for future generations.
I’m proud to be an Australian, the daughter of Greek migrants and the cultural fusion that allows me to celebrate both.
