The Big Shift – supporting women in need

Last month I attended ‘The Big Shift’ which is an event that’s organised by The Big Issue.  The event was held to coincide with Anti-Poverty Week.  Former Governor-General Quentin Bryce who is a Women’s Subscription Enterprise ambassador spoke at the event that was hosted by Lisa Wilkinson.

The event was held to raise awareness of The Big Issue Women’s Subscription Services where vulnerable women hand-pack subscription copies of The Big Issue magazine.  It is estimated that 46,000 women are homeless in Australia each night.  Their involvement in this initiative provides women who may be experiencing homelessness and disadvantage with an income, support and access to accredited training.

Along with other guests, I packed magazines alongside the women who work as part of the program. The Women’s Subscription Enterprise was established to enable women who were unable to sell the magazine on the street a source of income.
